[pt] Slow Motion Tours Culturando: Casa-Museu José Régio, Vila do Conde

SMT Douro (Douro River) - Along the Douro river bank secrets, legends and history

The Douro River can be, in many aspects, be considered like the “blood” running in the veins of Porto. Along history it has always been a very essential element and presence in Porto culture, economy, ecology and sociology. Also along many centuries Porto´s main way of communication with the Portugal north region but also the starting point for longer dangerous trips between Porto and other nations, mostly the main trading centers.

This tour is an opportunity to go through Douro right bank of Porto, eventually from Ribeira up to Foz with a different and deeper perspective. Going through different social, ecological but also historical aspects.

Find more about:

What are the main ecological problems of the Douro River. Its past as the Porto´s main communication way. Some of the most relevant events that here took place. Some of the most known important persons that were, one way or the other, connected with the Douro among many other relevant aspects of Porto and Portugal history, culture, society and ecology.

SMT5 (Vitória B) - What other victories hides Vitória?

Vitória forms what can be considered a very significant part of the city heart. In this area of Vitória you can find several of the city traditional trade and shops. Also some of the most known monuments but this side of Vitória is much behind that … there are secrets and stories hidden in places that most part of the population passes trough every day without knowing or noticing … this Tour is an invitation to get to know several of them.

Find more about:

Where´s the old road connecting Porto and Santiago, the “Fearless General”, the court of justice standing in the place that used to be a … surprise!, the bakeries square, what´s a “mamarracho”, the oldest café in the city that is not the oldest café in the city and the oldest café in the city that is indeed the oldest café in the city, where´s the smallest house in Porto, where´s “Jardim de João Chagas” ? - the question that 99% of the locals will not know to answer, why Portugal entered on the I World War, among many other relevant aspects of Porto and Portugal history, culture, society and ecology.

SMT1 (S.Nicolau) - Around the Douro River and its secrets

S.Nicolau is for sure one of the most ancient and historical districts from Porto historical centre. The narrow and some of the medieval streets from S.Nicolau tell a lot about Porto identity, developed in a very deep connection with the Douro River.

Find more about: The story behind the last “gate” from the “Fernandina” Wall, who was the local hero “Deocleciano Monteiro”? the disaster of “Ponte das Barcas”, the many stories hidden in the waters of the “Douro River”, why Porto was so essential as a … one of the main “activities” that Infante D.Henrique promoted, the coolest place in town … among many other relevant aspects of Porto and Portugal history, culture, society and ecology.

As diversas sessões tiveram o seguinte alinhamento:

Miragaia – a place of stories and legends – SMT6 (Miragaia)

Miragaia is one of the disctricts that makes part of the so called historical centre. It´s a land of magic legends and a place deep connected with the Douro River, with the naval construction so in each step you find stories, legends, places related with such ancient relation and identity

find more about:

What´s Porto patron saint (and perhaps it´s actually not S.João), where´s Rua dos Banhos or Rua do Ouro – that actually are no longer there any more, the “bloody” legend of “Gaia”, where was the jewish cemitery, what´s the “Bandeirinha da Saúde”, the dolphin that looks like … anything but a dolphin, among many other relevant aspects of Porto and Portugal history, culture, society and ecology.

Matosinhos – A Land of Fishermen and Sailors – SMT MTS

Matosinhos is a city since ever deeply connected to the sea. Known by its very authentic fishermen community, it´s a place with a lot to see and to get to know besides the coast and the beach it self. It´s still surprising how such an interesting place, so near from Porto, is still so much “out” of the touristic circuits.

Find more about:

what´s the real name of the “Anémona”sculpture, what´s a “mamarracho”, what was the former name of Matosinhos, the connection between Matosinhos and the portuguese land of opportunities in the XIX century:Brasil, the legend of the roman man that rided his horse into the sea, among many other relevant aspects of Matosinhos and Portugal history, culture, society and ecology.

Vila do Conde - A Journey into the portuguese Atlantic soul - SMT VC

Vila do Conde is a very particular city. Situated relatively close from Porto (about 20km) offers a very well preserved historical centre that transports us to the medieval times and to the roots of the Portuguese culture and history.

It´s known for its Fishermen community (the most known one in “Cachinas”), for the Bobbin Lace, for its Clarisse Convent, for the famous writers that chose it to live and to find inspiration.

In the sorroundings, in spite of all the progress of the most recent years, there´s still an interesting balance between rurality and urbanisation. Apart from that, Vila do Conde is situated in the rivermouth of the “Ave” River that represents a fundamental element for the entire region.

Find more about:

What makes the Cachinas fisherman community so particular? What sort of collection “José Régio” was so enthusiastic about? What was the relation of the “Santa Clara” Monastery with the Village. Join us and get to know why as many other relevant aspects of Vila do Conde and Portugal history, culture, society and ecology.
